A Conversation in Passing

Someone asked me today,
In a conversation in passing
“What do you like about her?”

words instantly ran around my mind without form.

Smart.
Compassionate.
Driven.
Intense.
Hilarious.
Beautiful.

But I knew you in more ways than just
what these words were describing.
so in my mind I wrote a story
and in this story I wrote about you.

You were smart, smarter than anyone I’d ever met,
not only book smart, but so intelligent, so knowledgeable
you could speak to anyone about anything.

You were driven,
laser focused on being the absolute best person you could be.
Driven in every way, to be a good friend, a good academic, a good daughter,
even when you are good enough, you always keep getting better.

You were the funniest person I had ever met,
you would light up every room you walked in to.
Regardless of how you felt, you never failed to put a smile on my face.

You were beautiful in the way that a sunset over the pacific is beautiful
I never could take my eyes off you
and don’t get me started on those eyes.

You were everything I had ever wanted
and so much more

So when I responded to that person
I told her about how wonderful, how smart, how driven
you are,
But I selfishly kept some things to myself
close to my heart
so that only I could know the real you.
