Songs on My Mind – Jorja – Benji

Sometimes you find a song and sometimes a song finds you. This week I was traveling for work, so I drove down from Chicago to Indianapolis to visit the client site. On weeks like this I find myself constantly listening to new music, either at work or on my drives over. On Monday I got into my car and started driving down, the wind biting through my car throughout the 3 hour drive to Indy. While I was defrosting the car, a battle between my cars 6 cylinder engine and the steep Chicago -20 windchill (it’s been absolutely mad here) I listened to Spotify’s Discover weekly. While not a weekly tradition by any means, the playlist is pretty good to find new songs. So as I’m shuffling through this playlist, nothing major is jumping out to me. Based off of the last few blog posts, readers can probably discern that I like slow calming music, so most of the songs I listened to on the drive were slow acoustic songs, some frank ocean covers, some RnB, and a lot of random songs that fill in the background. And then in the midst of it all, Jorja comes on.

Jorja is by all definitions a happy go lucky song. The artist, Benji, someone I have never heard before, is a story of a guy in love with a girl, and his journey winning her over. The lyrics are simple and repetitive, repeating the lyrics “don’t be scared to love me Jorja / I won’t waste your time.” But what wins me over with this song is the beat. It’s a challenge describing the beat of a song in a blog format, so while reading this, as always, I highly encourage you to listen to the song. The drums, in the background setting the pace of the upbeat music, piano notes from what sounds like an organ playfully humming, and then Benji’s beautiful soulful voice tying everything together. While the song is quick the repetitive nature of the song allowed me to play it over and over again this week, the beat and the chorus playing in my head through work.

This was a good week for me, and the music I listened to matched the vibe perfectly. Lots of edm, upbeat RnB and pop music filled my ears throughout this tough travel week. Even though work was tough, the weather was cold, and the hotel room was isolating, I found that my mood and my outlook was uplifted by the beats of the songs I was listening to. I can only help to look back at this week, as challenging as it was, with glee and with Jorja on my mind.

For those who read this whole blog post thank you so much for the support. I’ve been getting a lot of good feedback from this blog, and trust me there’s a lot more on the way. Until next time, see y’all 🙂
