Day 2: Finding Rhythm

Today was day 2 of the marathon training. I spent some time on reddit today trying to find a good training program and I found one that looks like it could work well. I found Hanson’s beginner marathon plan that takes 18 weeks to complete. He has a half marathon one as well, which would take me up to March. I’ve scheduled a half marathon in May, so this training program should do me well up until then. The program is difficult, even though it says its for beginners, so I changed it up to fit my schedule and my goals.

I think something people forget about training is that you don’t necessarily need to follow a schedule to a tee. I find it useful to have a schedule or a guide as a reference that I can use to build a regiment that works well for me. We’re all different in many ways, even if you have the same aspirations you might have other factors that others don’t. Say for me, my work requires me to travel often, so my workouts will need to be in hotel gyms, so accounting for that is important. If you have a family or a job that takes up a lot of your time, fitting fitness into your schedule in any way possible is a victory. To me, the important thing is that you show up.

I had a 2 mile run today, which I was nervous for. While I was making my plan earlier in the day, I scheduled out runs months in advance, the longest being 12 miles. That daunting number, one that seems unrealistic and extremely difficult, was looming over me during the day. The notion of me running 12 miles 2 months from now felt so overwhelming it through off my mood for the rest of my day. That is, up until my afternoon run. I had an hour break between meetings today so I went down to my apartment gym and did a quick 2 miles. I maintained an 11 minute pace, finishing the 2 miles in just over 22 minutes. The run felt great and very doable. The run gave me a burst of confidence that if I can do this, I can start chipping away at my goal. This was just the beginning. I’m excited for my 3 mile run on Thursday. Tomorrow’s back and bi day, going to go heavy and maybe hit some abs for fun. Till tomorrow, see ya!
